Tips on how to make your move successful

Before the moving truck arrives

When you get to your new place, it would be ideal to unpack the items you love and use most, displaying them in a way that makes you happy.  The sooner you’re able to settle in, the more comfortable you will be to call it home.  Hopefully you’ll have a minimum of two months to prepare.

Organize before the move to clear items you no longer use, need or desire.

The sooner the better to ensure ample time to sort through your belongings and

categorize them to keep, donate, give to someone in particular, repurpose, recycle

and discard.  A professional organizer can help you make the necessary decisions to

work through this process.

  • Sort, categorize and purge.  Now’s your time to divide up the space in your house

and focus on each area with detail.  By chipping away little by little, you’ll get more

done and have a sense of accomplishment as you slowly move throughout the house.

Less is more when it comes to things.  Do you love it?  Are you tired of it?  Does it

remind you of good things or of a bad memory?  Does it fit?  Do you have multiples of

this?  Pick your favorite one.  Releasing clutter and identifying the reasons why you

are holding onto certain items will bring freedom, clarity and joy into your life.

  • Memorabilia is a project in itself.  Consider all of the loose pictures & albums, kid’s artwork, trophies, mementos, sentimental cards and homemade gifts you’ve accumulated over the years.  Not to mention if you are also housing your parents past treasures.  Although this is not a good time to go through each individual piece because it is very time consuming, it is   a good idea to gather all of the components together and place them into protective bins with a label.  When you get to your new place, you can schedule a time to begin working on a project of this magnitude and you’ll be able to see all of the components involved.

  • Paper Piles are time consuming but are important to work through.  Having the current paperwork close at hand can give you peace of mind and easy access when you need specific documents.  A strong filing system is important to establish before you move.

  • Furniture, antiques, artwork, electronics and collectibles can be sold in many ways via an online platform such as Craigslist, through an auction or consignment shop, donated, or by holding a garage sale, depending upon your time frame and budget.  An organizer can offer you multiple ways to recoup some money or just to save on time.

Make your new house a home by displaying the things that make you happy.  As you settle

into your new home, each box that you open should be like opening a present.  Since you took the time to sort through your things ahead of time, you can look forward to setting up shop with the things that bring joy to your life.  You will have eliminated the distractions that clutter can bring, allowing you to get on with your life.

As a member of NAPO and NAPO-SFBA, I agree to follow a professional code of ethics.  An investment in hiring a professional organizer will motivate you to get the job done right before you get to your new place, so you can enjoy it from day one.
